Paz Gutierrez to Attend Summit of the Americas
Paz Gutierrez, a Senior Fellow in the Energy and Climate partnership of the
Americas (ECPA), will be attending the Sixth Summit of the Americas, April 14-15,
in Cartagena, Colombia. The Summit will bring together 24 heads of state and government
to discuss the theme of "Connecting the Americas: Partners for Prosperity." At the
Summit, Paz will present on disaster risk management and also serve as judge in the
finals of the Talent and Innovation Competition of the Americas.
Nature's Toolbox - Field Museum Exhibition
The sucrose wall system developed by Paz Gutierrez in the study of bio-active
matter for thermal and light transmission control will be on display at the
Field Museum as part of the Nature's Toolbox Exhibition.
This exhibition "features innovative, eye-capturing contemporary art which
helps visitors understand and appreciate the life-or-death interdependence
between the 10-20 million species on earth - including humans - and the
quality of the environment we share."
Gutierrez Lectures at the University of Buffalo
Paz Gutierrez presented a lecture titled "Transformative Research/Research
Transformations" at the University of Buffalo's School of Architecture and
Planning. The main question that this lecture discussed was:

Gutierrez Lectures at Encuentros 2011
Paz Gutierrez presented a lecture at the Encuentros 2011 conference which
took place at the University of California, Berkeley. The conference recognizes
the key role that multidisciplinary methods plays in the generation of innovative

Paz Gutierrez presented a lecture titled "Urban Futures: Adaptable Resourcing -
Infrastructures, Buildings, and Envelopes" at the National Academy of
Engineer's 2011 EU-US Frontiers of Engineering Symposium.
Bentley Educator of the Year Award
Paz Gutierrez was selected for the 2011 Bentley Educator of Year Award.
The Educator of the Year award recognizes a member of the academic community who has an outstanding
record of achievement and is committed to inspiring students to pursue careers in the
architecture, engineering, and construction professions.
Detox Tower Finalist for eVolo 2011 Skyscraper Competition
Detox Towers, which uses the bio-synthentic self-regulated membrane of algae/lichen to break down air pollutants,
is selected as a finalist in the 2011 Evolo Skyscraper Competition.
Sarlo Distinguished Faculty Award
Paz Gutierrez selected for the Sarlo Distinguished Junior Faculty Award, which, established in 2007, recognizes a UC Berkeley
faculty member for their vital role in mentoring graduate students and training future faculty.
Fulbright NEXUS Scholar Award
Paz Gutierrez chosen as one of the five U.S. scholar winners for the Fulbright NEXUS scholar program.
As a member of this team, she will be working to promote best practices in fighting poverty and inequality in the Western Hemisphere.
NSF EFRI Award
The SOAP (solar optics-based active panels) Project is awarded the National Science Foundation's EFRI Award, which
aims to advance solar-based greywater disinfection and thermal management in
buildings through microphotonics and microfluidics.
U.C. Berkeley Project Wins Blue Award First Prize
Lan Hu and Jungmin An's "Hygro Shell" project, advised by Paz Gutierrez, wins the Blue Award 2009 First
Prize. The award's main purpose is to establish and reinforce the topic of sustainability in architecture,
regional planning and urbanism at universities.
2009-10 ACSA Creative Achievement Award
Paz Gutierrez awarded "Honorable Mention" for ACSA's Creative Achievement Award, which seeks to
recognize a specific creative achievement in teaching, design, scholarship, research, or service
that advances architectural education.
Hellman Award 2009 Promise of Research Distinction
Paz Gutierrez is awarded the Helman Faculty Award at UC Berkeley in recognition of her promise of research distinction.
